World Cup (Champions)

The World Cup kicks off in just one week. All 48 teams will be there, but unfortunately, the Chinese national team has once again failed to qualify.

In China, the national football team has a nickname: “the balancer of national fortune.” It comes from a traditional Chinese belief that “when water is full, it overflows; when the moon is full, it begins to wane; when prosperity reaches its peak, decline will inevitably follow.” In other words, people believe that when everything is going too well, one should be cautious, and that leaving a little room for imperfection is what allows fortune to last longer. China has developed remarkably well in many areas over the past few decades, so based on this belief, the football team has to stay weak in order to keep the country’s good fortune going.

Well, at least we’re not alone. Italy will be watching the World Cup from home too!

월드컵 개막이 이제 일주일밖에 안 남았네요. 48개 팀이 출전하는데, 중국 대표팀은 역시 본선 진출에 실패했어요.

중국에서는 중국 축구 국가대표팀에 “국운의 균형추”라는 별명이 있어요. 무슨 뜻이냐면, 중국에서는 “水滿則溢, 月滿則虧, 盛極必衰 (물이 가득 차면 넘치고, 달이 차면 기울며, 극도로 흥성하면 쇠퇴하기 마련이다)”라는 자연의 순리를 믿거든요. 즉, 국가든 사람이든 모든 일이 너무 잘 풀릴 때는 일부러 부족함을 남겨 둬야 행운이 더 오래간다고 생각합니다. 중국은 지난 수십 년 동안 거의 모든 방면에서 눈부신 발전을 이루었기 때문에, 축구라도 좀 못해야 좋은 국운이 계속 이어질 수 있다는 뜻이죠. ㅋㅋㅋ

뭐, 그래도 우리만 그런 건 아니네요. 이탈리아도 집에서 월드컵을 보게 됐으니까요! ㅋㅋㅋ
