Brutal Heatwave in Paris

The recent heatwave in Paris reminded me of a WWII history documentary I watched before. On June 23, 1940, when Hitler visited Paris, he was wearing a long, heavy coat. You might say, “Well, maybe Hitler was like Jensen Huang and just didn’t mind the heat.” But if you look closely, everyone else was wearing heavy coats too. Compare that with Paris today… It really shows how dramatically the climate has changed.

Dinosaurs lived on Earth for about 165 million years, and they never tried to reshape the planet the way we do. Humans, on the other hand, have spent much of our time trying to reshape it. Of course, every species eventually goes extinct. It’s just a matter of time. But very likely, humans may become the first species to press the fast-forward button on their own extinction on this planet.

최근 파리의 폭염을 보면서 예전에 봤던 제2차 세계대전 다큐멘터리가 떠올랐어요. 1940년 6월 23일, 히틀러가 파리를 방문했을 당시 두꺼운 코트를 입고 있었거든요. “뭐, 히틀러도 젠슨 황처럼 더위를 안 타는 사람이었을 수도 있잖아?” 하지만 자세히 보면 주변 사람들도 모두 비슷한 코트를 입고 있었어요. 지금의 파리와 비교해 보면, 기후가 얼마나 크게 변했는지 실감하게 되네요.

공룡은 약 1억 6,500만 년 동안 지구에서 살았지만, 인간처럼 지구를 열심히 바꾸려 하지는 않았죠. 반면 인간은 끊임없이 세상을 바꾸며 살아왔습니다. 물론 모든 종은 언젠가는 멸종합니다. 시간의 문제일 뿐이에요. 하지만 인류는 어쩌면 지구 역사상 처음으로 스스로 멸종의 ‘패스트포워드 버튼’을 누르고 있는 종인지도 모릅니다.
