Vladivostok: China’s New Transit Hub for Domestic Shipments

Vladivostok, known as “Haishenwai” in Chinese, translates to “a bay full of sea cucumbers.” Prior to its handover to Russia in 1858, Chinese residents relied on fishing sea cucumbers as a means of livelihood in the region. A similar case can be observed in San Francisco, known as “Jiujinshan” in Chinese, which literally means “old gold mountain.” This name originates from the fact that Chinese immigrants initially arrived in San Francisco as gold miners, driven by the pursuit of their fortune during the era of the Gold Rush. Then, what do you think Phoenix is called in Chinese? It’s “Fenghuangcheng”, which literally means “the City of the Phoenix.” In China, foreign words are sometimes written to mimic their original sounds, but more often they’re translated in a way that conveys the meaning behind them. As for Korean cities, since they already have their own Chinese characters, we simply use those rather than translating them.

블라디보스토크는 중국어로 “해삼외(海参崴)’라고 부릅니다. 뚯은 ‘해삼이 가득한 만’이라는 뜻입니다. 1858년 러시아에 넘어가기 전까지 이 지역의 중국인들은 대부분 해삼 잡이를 생계수단으로 삼았습니다. 비슷한 사례로 “샌프란시스코” 가 있습니다. 중국어로 “구금산(旧金山)’, 즉 ‘옛날의 금으로 된 산’이라고 부르는데, 이는 골드러시 시대에 일확천금을 꿈꾸며 이주한 중국인들로부터 비롯된 이름입니다. 그럼 미국의 피닉스는 중국어로 뭐라고 할까요? 바로 ‘봉황성(鳳凰城)’, 봉황의 도시! 중국에서는 외래어를 한글처럼 음으로 옮기기도 하지만, 그 의미를 살려 의역하는 경우도 많습니다. 한국의 도시 이름은 이미 한자가 있기 때문에, 번역하지 않고 그대로 그 한자를 사용합니다.

Starting from June 1st, 2023, goods originating from Jilin and Heilongjiang provinces in northeastern China will now have the opportunity to be transported to domestic destinations through the Vladivostok port. This new arrangement is expected to bring about a substantial reduction in transportation costs.

2023년 6월 1일부터 중국 동북지방 지린성과 헤이룽장성에서 러시아 블라디보스톡을 중계항으로 이용해 동남부 지방과 국내 무역을 할 수 있게 되었습니다. 이 새로운 계약을 통해 운송 비용을 크게 절감할 수 있을 것으로 기대됩니다.
