Zelensky Calls on Europe to Band Together and Defend Their Own Interests

Zelensky seems to have realized this too late—being a so-called ‘ally’ doesn’t always mean you’re a valued friend; sometimes, it just means you’re a pawn.

Some in Europe may not fully understand what’s happening in Washington right now, but let’s focus on understanding ourselves right here in Europe. We must give strength to Europe, first. Does America need Europe as a market? Yes. But as an ally, I don’t know. A few days ago, President Trump told me about his conversation with Putin. Not once did he mention that American needs Europe at the table, that says a lot. The old days are over when American supported Europe, just because it always had.

유럽의 일부 사람들은 지금 워싱턴에서 벌어지는 일을 완전히 이해하지 못할 수도 있습니다. 그러나 지금은 우리 자신을 이해하는 데 집중해야 합니다. 우리는 먼저 유럽을 강하게 만들어야 합니다. 미국이 유럽을 시장으로 필요로 합니까? 그렇습니다. 하지만 동맹으로서 필요로 하는지는 모르겠습니다. 며칠 전, 트럼프 대통령이 저에게 푸틴과의 대화에 대해 이야기해 주었는데, 단 한 번도 미국이 유럽을 협상 테이블에 있어야 한다고 언급하지 않았습니다. 이것만 봐도 많은 것을 시사합니다. 미국이 단순히 과거부터 그래왔기 때문에 유럽을 지원하던 시대는 끝났습니다.
