Haihua Island, Hainan Province
I’m sure you’ve heard of Hainan at least once, right? Hainan is the second-largest island in China, located in the southernmost part of mainland China. It faces Vietnam to the west. The island is about 34,000 square kilometers, which is around 18 times the size of Jeju Island.
Hainan is a popular vacation destination because it stays warm all year round, with temperatures usually above 20 degrees Celsius. In winter, many older people from northern China come to Hainan to escape the cold and spend the winter there. In China, we call them “migratory bird seniors.” Recently, with more people working from home or working remotely, more young people are also choosing to stay in Hainan for a certain period of time.
The largest city in Hainan is Haikou, the capital of Hainan Province, located in the north of the island. Another major city is Sanya, in the south. In recent years, large resort communities have also been developed in smaller cities. These places offer everything in one area—you can live, relax, and enjoy your vacation without going far. One example is Haihua Island, located off the coast of Danzhou. Danzhou is about 140 kilometers from Haikou. There is a direct bus from Haikou Airport to Haihua Island, and you can also take the high-speed train that runs around the island from Haikou. So, getting there is pretty easy.
Haihua Island is a man-made island, similar to Palm Jumeirah in Dubai. The area is beautiful and has almost everything you need for daily life and a relaxing vacation. It has become more popular in recent years. The cost of living, including rent and food, is also much lower than in big cities. These days, it’s not just retired people who come here. There are also young people who want to stay for a while, relax, and recharge. And there are middle-aged people who choose “lying flat.” They feel they’ve already made enough money and don’t need to work anymore. They just want to slow down, relax, and enjoy the rest of their lives.
I’ve been to Haikou once and Sanya twice, and I really enjoyed my time there. Just imagine looking at the ocean every day, having a nice drink, and simply enjoying a peaceful “slow life.” How wonderful would that be? Just thinking about it makes me smile!
여러분, 하이난(海南)은 한 번쯤 들어보셨죠? 하이난은 중국에서 두 번째로 큰 섬으로, 중국 대륙의 최남단에 위치해 있습니다. 서쪽으로는 베트남과 마주하고 있습니다. 면적은 약 34,000제곱킬로미터로, 제주도의 약 18배 정도입니다.
하이난은 일 년 내내 기온이 20도 이상으로 따뜻해서 인기 있는 휴양지입니다. 특히 겨울이 되면 추위를 피하기 위해 중국 북부 지역의 많은 어르신들이 하이난으로 와서 겨울을 보냅니다. 중국에서는 이런 분들을 “철새 노인”이라고 부릅니다. 최근에는 재택근무나 원격근무를 하는 사람들이 많아지면서 젊은 사람들도 하이난에서 일정 기간 생활하는 경우가 늘고 있습니다.
하이난에서 가장 큰 도시는 섬의 북쪽에 위치한 성도 하이커우(海口)이고, 그다음은 남쪽에 위치한 싼야(三亞)입니다. 최근에는 비교적 작은 도시에도 대규모 휴양단지가 개발되면서 주거와 휴식, 관광을 한곳에서 즐길 수 있는 곳들이 많이 생겼습니다. 그중 하나가 단저우(儋州) 앞바다에 위치한 하이화다오(海花島)입니다. 참고로 하이커우에서 단저우까지는 약 140킬로미터 정도입니다. 하이커우 공항에서 하이화다오까지 운행하는 리무진 버스가 있고, 하이커우 기차역에서는 섬을 순환하는 고속열차도 이용할 수 있어서 교통이 매우 편리합니다.
하이화다오는 인공섬으로, 두바이의 팜 아일랜드와 비슷하다고 볼 수 있습니다. 주변 환경이 아름답고 생활과 휴양에 필요한 시설도 잘 갖춰져 있어서 최근 몇 년 동안 많은 관심을 받고 있습니다. 월세와 식비 같은 생활비도 대도시에 비해 훨씬 저렴한 편입니다.그래서 요즘에는 은퇴한 어르신들뿐만 아니라 잠시 머물면서 재충전하고 싶은 젊은이들, 그리고 그냥 ‘탕핑(躺平)’, 즉 이미 돈을 충분히 벌어서 더 이상 일할 필요가 없다고 생각하고 편하게 쉬기로 한 중년층도 많이 찾아오고 있습니다.
저는 하이커우에 한 번, 싼야에는 두 번 가봤는데 정말 좋았어요. 매일 바다를 바라보며 음료 한 잔을 마시면서 여유롭게 즐기는 제대로 된 ‘슬로우 라이프’, 얼마나 좋을까요! 생각만 해도 저절로 미소가 지어져요. ㅋㅋㅋㅋ
