Telephone Operators in 1930s Shanghai

Back in 1930s Shanghai, being a telephone operator was actually a pretty well-paying job. You needed at least a middle school education and a pleasant voice. You also had to speak both Shanghainese and Mandarin, and knowing English was a big plus.

These days, a lot of people worry that AI is going to take away their jobs. But if you look back at history, jobs have always come and gone as the world changed. When I was growing up, there were photo studios all over my neighborhood, and developing film was a real profession. Of course, there are still places that do it today, but it’s nowhere near as common as it used to be. Maybe a few years from now, even some of today’s high-paying professions—like actors and singers—could start to disappear.

But as old jobs disappear, new ones are always being created. People have always found ways to adapt to change, and I think we’ll continue to do the same.

1930년대 상하이에서는 전화 교환원이 당시 꽤 수입이 높은 직업이었어요. 중학교 이상의 학력이 필요했고, 목소리도 좋아야 했습니다. 상하이어뿐만 아니라 만다린어도 할 줄 알아야 했고, 영어까지 할 수 있으면 더 좋았다고 해요.

요즘 사람들은 AI 때문에 일자리를 잃게 될까 봐 걱정하곤 합니다. 하지만 역사를 돌아보면, 직업이라는 것은 원래 시대의 변화에 따라 끊임없이 생겨나고 사라져 왔습니다. 제가 어렸을 때만 해도 동네에 사진관이 많았고, 필름을 현상하는 일도 하나의 직업이었습니다. 물론 지금도 이런 일을 하는 곳이 있지만, 예전처럼 흔하게 볼 수 있는 건 아니죠. 어쩌면 몇 년 후에는 지금의 고소득 직업들, 예를 들어 배우나 가수 같은 직업도 점차 역사의 무대에서 사라질지 모릅니다.

오래된 직업이 사라지는 동시에 새로운 직업도 끊임없이 생겨납니다. 결국 인간은 언제나 시대의 변화에 적응하며 새로운 길을 찾아갈 것입니다.
