Space Force – The Chinese Robotic Arm Scence

This is a scene from the end of the first episode of Space Force Season 1. The show uses humor and absurdity to make fun of the space rivalry between the U.S. and China. Steve Carell plays General Mark R. Naird, the four-star general in charge of the newly created U.S. Space Force.

He and his team put a lot of effort into launching an important satellite called Epsilon 6, only to have a Chinese spacecraft quietly come along and clip off its solar panels, causing it to lose power. The next episode is basically about the U.S. Space Force trying to save the damaged satellite.

In real life, both the International Space Station and China’s Tiangong Space Station have robotic arms that can grab and move equipment and assist with repairs. So the show basically takes China’s real-life space capabilities and their potential military applications and exaggerates them for comedy.

실제로 국제우주정거장(ISS)과 중국의 톈궁 우주정거장에는 모두 로봇팔이 설치되어 있으며, 장비를 붙잡거나 옮기고 수리 작업을 지원하는 데 사용됩니다. 이 드라마는 이런 중국의 실제 우주 기술과 그 잠재적인 군사적 활용 가능성을 코믹하게 과장해서 보여준 거죠.
