The USS Lincolon Heading Home after 272 Days at Sea

When the U.S. can’t beat Iran militarily, I guess all that’s left is to play the economic pressure card. Tariffs, sanctions—that seems to be Trump’s answer to everything. By the way, China has already said no to his so-called “economic D-Day” threat.

Speaking of the sailors aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, if that sailor hadn’t jumped overboard, they probably would’ve been stuck out there even longer. I bet everyone on board was secretly grateful to the guy who jumped.

This also got me thinking about the Sirens’ song. Ancient sailors could spend months at sea, dealing with isolation, stress, dehydration, and poor nutrition. Under those conditions, it’s easy to imagine some of them experiencing auditory or visual hallucinations. So maybe the mysterious voices they heard weren’t coming from the sea at all, but from inside their own heads.

미국이 군사적으로 이란을 이길 수 없게 되자, 이제 남은 건 경제적 압박 카드뿐인 것 같다. 관세에 제재에, 트럼프에게는 무슨 일이든 경제적 압박이 답인 모양이다. 참고로 중국은 트럼프의 이른바 ‘경제적 D-Day’ 위협에 이미 “No”라고 했다.

그 수병이 바다로 뛰어들지 않았다면 아마 더 오랫동안 바다에 발이 묶여 있었을지도 모른다. 링컨호에 있던 사람들 모두 속으로는 그 수병에게 고마워했을 것 같다. ㅋㅋㅋ

문득 세이렌의 노래가 떠올랐다. 고대의 선원들은 몇 달씩 바다에서 지내며 고립과 스트레스, 탈수와 영양 부족에 시달렸다. 그런 환경이라면 일부 선원들이 환청이나 환각을 경험했을 수도 있지 않을까. 어쩌면 그들이 들었다는 신비로운 목소리는 바다에서 들려온 게 아니라, 자기 머릿속에서 들려온 것이었을지도 모른다.
