Seoul Traffic Collapses After Sudden Snowstorm

I pulled out of Incheon Airport Terminal 2 around 5:50, and maybe ten minutes later it started snowing. My heart sank—“Oh no, please not this. Why does it have to be today?!” And of course the snow just kept getting heavier.

After I got off the airport expressway and onto Olympic-daero, traffic was basically at a standstill. For most of the way I was crawling along at like 2 km/h. I didn’t get home until 10.

The 70 kilometers from the airport to my place took four hours. Four hours—just because of a snowstorm. How can traffic fall apart this easily?! It makes absolutely no sense to me. Honestly, it’s been years and nothing has gotten better. If a snowstorm is already too much for the government, what confidence can you have in its response to a real crisis?

인천공항 2터미널에서 5시 50분쯤 나와서 출발했는데, 10분 지나자마자 눈이 오기 시작하더니 점점 더 심해졌어요. 속으로 “아… 제발…왜 하필 오늘이야?!” 했는데 불안한 예감이 딱 맞았죠.

공항고속도로를 지나 올림픽대로로 들어서는 순간부터 길이 완전히 멈춰버렸어요. 거의 내내 시속 2km 정도로 기어가다시피 했고, 집에 도착하니 10시가 훌쩍 넘었더라고요.

공항에서 집까지 70km 오는데 4시간이라니… 이게 진짜 말이 되나요? 눈 한 번 왔다고 교통이 이렇게까지 마비되는 게 너무 어이없고 답답해요. 왜 매번 이러는지 도저히 이해가 안 돼요. 솔직히 몇 년이 지났는데도 나아진 게 하나도 없어요. 폭설 하나도 못 감당하는데, 진짜 위기 때 제대로 대응할 거라고 누가 믿겠어요?
