The Day of the Jackal (2024)
Here is a British spy thriller series I watched recently, The Day of the Jackal. It tells the story of an elite professional assassin known only as the Jackal, who carries out high-level assassinations while being pursued across the globe by an intelligence officer. Eddie Redmayne plays the Jackal, and the series turns that pursuit into a sharp, suspenseful cat-and-mouse thriller.
One of the most unforgettable scenes takes place at sea. Near a Croatian island, the Jackal prepares for an assassination from offshore. He steals a boat, mounts his rifle on a Steadicam rig to keep it steady even as the boat rocks, and waits for the perfect moment to shoot his target during a morning swim. The entire sequence of aiming, waiting, and firing is incredibly tense, creating an almost suffocating sense of pressure.
What makes the drama so compelling is not just the action itself, but how convincingly it portrays the mindset of a top-tier assassin. The show highlights his meticulous planning, perfect emotional control, and near-flawless execution. Well, in some ways, those qualities are surprisingly similar to the skills needed to survive in the workplace.
You can also learn a lot of fascinating things from it. For example, a bullet fired at an extreme distance of around 4,000 meters can stay in the air for roughly 8 to 10 seconds. In real life, the longest recorded long-range shot is around 3,800 meters, achieved by Vyacheslav Kovalskiy in 2023 during the Russo-Ukrainian war. At that distance, the shooter is pushing close to the practical limits of real-world sniper fire. The challenge is not just the distance itself. The shooter has to account for bullet drop, wind drift, air density, and even the Earth’s rotation during the bullet’s long flight. So at nearly 4 kilometers, the shot is approaching the limit of what a bullet can realistically achieve in a confirmed precision kill.
Anyway, I’d highly recommend it if you’re also into psychological warfare and tense cat-and-mouse thriller.
최근에 제가 재미있게 본 영국 스파이 스릴러 드라마가 하나 있는데요, 바로 《자칼의 날》입니다.
이 작품은 재칼이라는 이름으로만 알려진 세계 최고 수준의 프로 암살자가 전 세계를 돌아다니며 고위급 표적을 제거하는 이야기입니다. 동시에 한 정보기관 요원이 그를 집요하게 추적하면서 이야기가 전개됩니다. 에디 레드메인이 재칼 역을 맡았는데, 두 사람 사이의 긴장감 넘치는 추격전이 매우 날카롭고 몰입감 있게 그려집니다. 말 그대로 치열한 ‘캣 앤 마우스’ 스릴러라고 할 수 있습니다.
가장 인상적인 장면 중 하나는 바다에서 벌어집니다. 크로아티아의 한 섬 근처 바다에서 재칼은 해상에서 암살을 준비합니다. 그는 보트를 훔친 뒤, 배가 흔들리는 상황에서도 총이 안정적으로 유지되도록 저격총을 스테디캠에 장착하고, 아침 수영 중인 표적을 쏠 완벽한 순간을 기다립니다. 조준하고, 기다렸다가, 발사하는 그 모든 과정은 극도로 긴장감 넘치며, 거의 숨이 막힐 정도의 압박감을 만들어 냅니다.
이 드라마가 특히 매력적인 이유는 단순히 액션 때문만이 아니라, 최고 수준 암살자의 사고방식을 매우 설득력 있게 보여주기 때문입니다. 작품은 그의 치밀한 계획 능력, 완벽한 감정 통제, 탁월한 실행력을 강조합니다. 어떤 면에서는 이런 요소들이 직장 생활에서의 생존 전략과도 꽤 닮아 있습니다. ㅋㅋㅋ
또한 이 드라마를 보면서 흥미로운 사실들도 알 수 있습니다. 예를 들어 약 4,000미터 거리에서 발사된 총알은 목표에 도달하는 데 8~10초 정도가 걸릴 수 있습니다. 실제 최장거리 저격 기록은 약 3,800미터로, 2023년 러시아-우크라이나 전쟁 당시 우크라이나 저격수 뱌체슬라프 코발스키가 달성한 것으로 알려져 있습니다. 이 정도 거리면 이미 현실적인 정밀 저격의 한계에 가까운 수준이라고 할 수 있습니다. 탄도 낙하, 풍향 풍속 , 공기 밀도, 지구의 자전까지 모두 고려해야 하기 때문입니다.

From that moment on, he no longer wanted to be a tool of the state, and became a professional assassin who operates by his own rules and for the right price.
재칼은 원래 영국군 저격수로, 아프가니스탄에서 탈레반 지도자들을 겨냥한 임무를 수행하던 인물이었습니다. 하지만 임무를 완수한다는 명분 아래 무고한 민간인들이 희생되는 모습을 본 뒤, 그는 자신이 해온 일의 본질을 깨닫게 됩니다. 결국 자신도 ‘의무’나 ‘국가의 이익’이라는 말로 포장된 채, 누군가를 대신해 사람을 죽이고 있었던 것뿐이라는 사실을 알게 된 것입니다. 그 이후 그는 더 이상 국가의 도구로 살기를 거부하고, 자신의 원칙과 대가에 따라 움직이는 직업적 암살자로 살아가게 됩니다.
