China Achieves First Land-Based Rocket Recovery

Just like SpaceX’s Falcon 9, Zhuque-3 successfully returned to Earth and landed vertically on its own landing legs. This marks China’s first successful ground-based, leg-assisted landing of an orbital-class rocket booster.

For your information, Zhuque-3 was developed by LandSpace, a privately owned Chinese space company similar to SpaceX in the U.S. What’s more, according to Chinese media, Zhuque-3’s launch cost is only about 35% of the cost of SpaceX’s Falcon 9.

A little background on the name “Zhuque”: It is a mythical red bird from ancient Chinese mythology that represents the south. The main southern gate of Chang’an, the capital of the Tang Dynasty, was also called Zhuque Gate.
