Let’s embark on a musical journey to the Middle East today! I’m thrilled to introduce a beautiful love song titled “Don’t Leave Me Alone,” performed by a renowned pop singer from Iran. It’s sung in Persian, the official language of Iran. Here’s an intriguing point: even though Iran stands as the most populous nation in the Middle East and the second-largest by land area, its inhabitants aren’t Arabs. They speak Persian, not Arabic, which dominates most other Middle Eastern countries and North Africa. To many, they might appear similar because both Persian and Arabic use the Arabic script, but they are actually very different languages. It’s kind of like how English and French both use the Roman alphabet, but their pronunciation and grammar are totally different.

I’ve always been fascinated by the Middle East. Perhaps it’s the “Arabian Nights” tales I read as a kid that sparked this interest? The culture and history are just so rich and intriguing. When I visited Iran in 2014, all women, including foreign visitors, were required to wear the hijab in accordance with Islamic law. I remember the moment the China Southern Airlines plane touched down. As the plane doors opened, policemen came on board to ensure that all women had their hijabs on. This memory still remains vivid to me. However, I’ve heard from some friends who visited Iran this summer that starting this year, female visitors are no longer required to wear hijabs. 오늘은 중동으로 음악 여행을 떠나볼까요? 이란의 유명 팝 가수가 부른 아름다운 사랑 노래 ‘날 혼자 두지 마세요’ 를 소개해 드릴게요. 이 노래는 이란의 공식 언어인 페르시아어 노래입니다. 흥미로운 점은 이란이 중동에서 인구가 가장 많고 면적이 두 번째로 큰 나라지만, 이란인은 아랍인이 아니라는 점입니다. 그렇기 때문에 대부분의 다른 중동 나라와 북아프리카에서 사용되는 아랍어가 아닌 페르시아어를 사용합니다. 페르시아어와 아랍어는 모두 아랍 문자를 사용하기 때문에 비슷해 보이지만 실제로는 매우 다른 언어입니다. 영어와 프랑스어가 모두 로마자를 사용하지만 발음과 문법이 완전히 다른 것과 비슷합니다.

저는 어렸을 때부터 중동에 대한 동경이 있었습니다. 어렸을 때 읽었던 ‘아라비안나이트’ 의 영향일까요? 중동 문화와 역사가 정말 풍부하고 흥미로워요. 2014년에 이란을 방문했을 때 외국인 방문객을 포함한 모든 여성은 이슬람 율법에 따라 히잡을 착용해야 했습니다. 중국남방항공 비행기가 착륙하던 순간이 기억납니다. 비행기 문이 열리자 경찰이 기내로 들어와 모든 여성이 히잡을 착용했는지 확인했습니다. 이 기억은 아직도 생생하게 남아 있습니다. 하지만 이번 여름에 이란을 방문한 몇몇 친구들로부터 올해부터 외국인 여성 방문객은 더 이상 히잡을 쓰지 않아도 된다고 들었습니다. 주목할 만한 변화죠! 자, 이제 수다는 그만 떨고 이 아름다운 노래를 즐기면서 샤흐리야르와 셰헤라자데가 된 자신을 상상해 보세요! 😆😆😆
