Battle of Shanghai (Aug 13 – Nov 26, 1937)
Korea’s Liberation Day is approaching. In China, however, September 3 is commemorated as Victory Day, the day after Japan signed the Instrument of Surrender on September 2. August 13 is also an important date in the history of the Sino-Japanese War. On this day in 1937, the Battle of Shanghai began.
The Battle of Shanghai marked a major turning point, as the Sino-Japanese War escalated into a full-scale conflict. The battle lasted for about three months and resulted in devastating losses, with Chinese forces suffering around 300,000 casualties. However, the fierce resistance disrupted Japan’s plan to defeat China within three months and contributed to turning the conflict into a prolonged war that lasted eight years.
If you visit Shanghai today, you can visit the Sihang Warehouse, one of the most significant historical sites from the battle. It was here that about 400 Chinese soldiers held their ground for six days against relentless attacks by nearly 20,000 Japanese troops. Even today, bullet holes and artillery damage can still be seen on the exterior walls, serving as a powerful reminder of the intense fighting that took place there.
No matter how much time passes, we must never allow this history to fade from our memory. Remembering the past helps ensure that such suffering is never repeated. We must also honor the countless sacrifices that made peace and freedom possible and pass their value on to future generations.
광복절이 다가오고 있습니다. 한국과 달리 중국에서는 일본이 항복 문서에 서명한 9월 2일의 다음 날인 9월 3일을 ‘승리기념일’로 기념합니다. 하지만 오늘, 8월 13일 역시 중국 역사에서 매우 중요한 날입니다. 바로 1937년 8월 13일, 상하이 전투(淞沪会战)가 시작된 날입니다.
상하이 전투는 중일전쟁이 전면전으로 확대되는 분기점이 되었습니다. 약 3개월 동안 치열한 전투가 이어졌고, 중국군 역시 약 30만 명의 사상자가 발생하는 등 막대한 인명 피해를 입었습니다. 하지만 이 전투는 3개월 안에 중국을 굴복시키려 했던 일본의 계획을 좌절시켰고, 전쟁이 8년에 걸친 장기전으로 이어지는 데 큰 영향을 미쳤습니다.
지금 상하이를 여행한다면 ‘사행창고(四行倉庫)’를 방문해 볼 수 있습니다. 이곳은 당시 400여 명의 중국군 장병들이 2만 명에 달하는 일본군의 거센 공격에 맞서 6일 동안 끝까지 저항했던 역사적인 장소입니다. 지금도 건물 외벽에는 총탄과 포탄이 남긴 흔적이 그대로 남아 있어, 당시의 치열했던 순간을 생생하게 느낄 수 있습니다.
세월이 흘러도 이러한 역사가 우리의 기억 속에서 희미해져서는 안 됩니다. 역사의 아픔이 다시 반복되지 않도록 과거를 꼭 기억해야 하며, 수많은 희생을 통해 지켜낸 평화와 자유의 소중함 또한 세대에서 세대로 전해져야 합니다.
