Bronze Chime Bells of Marquis Yi of Zeng

What you are hearing is the sound of the Bronze Chime Bells of Marquis Yi of Zeng. These bells date back about 2,500 years to the early Warring States period. They were important burial objects placed in the tomb of Marquis Yi of Zeng, the ruler of the State of Zeng, and were discovered in 1978 in Suizhou, Hubei Province, China. As a side note, Marquis Yi lived about 200 years before Qin Shi Huang, the First Emperor of China, and around the same time as the ancient Greek philosopher Socrates.
The complete set consists of 65 bronze bells. It is not only enormous in scale but also remarkably well preserved. What is even more amazing is that, even after about 2,500 years, these bells can still produce a wide range of musical notes and even play a seven-note scale.
The bells also have inscriptions on them, totaling 2,828 Chinese characters. These inscriptions show the highly developed knowledge of music theory and tuning systems during the Warring States period. Therefore, the bells are extremely valuable not only for studying the music of that time, but also for understanding ancient bronze-casting technology.
Today, the Bronze Chime Bells of Marquis Yi of Zeng are on display at the Hubei Provincial Museum. Many other amazing treasures were also discovered in the tomb of Marquis Yi. If you’re interested, I’ll share more about them another time.

지금 들으시는 소리는 증후을 청동 편종(曾侯乙青銅編鐘)에서 나오는 소리입니다. 이 편종은 약 2,500년 전인 전국시대 초기, 증나라의 군주였던 증후을(?~기원전 433년)의 무덤에 묻혀 있던 중요한 부장품으로 1978년 중국 후베이성 쑤이저우에서 출토되었습니다. 참고로 증후을은 진시황보다 약 200년 앞선 시대의 인물로, 고대 그리스의 철학자 소크라테스와 거의 같은 시대를 살았습니다.
이 편종은 모두 65개의 청동 종으로 이루어져 있으며, 규모가 매우 클 뿐만 아니라 보존 상태도 상당히 양호합니다. 더욱 놀라운 점은 약 2,500년이라는 긴 시간이 흘렀음에도 오늘날까지 다양한 음을 낼 수 있고, 7음 음계까지 연주할 수 있다는 것입니다.
또한 종에는 명문이 새겨져 있는데, 모두 2,828자에 달합니다. 그 내용은 전국시대의 음악 이론과 음률에 대한 높은 수준의 지식을 보여줍니다. 따라서 당시의 음악뿐만 아니라 청동 주조 기술을 연구하는 데에도 매우 중요한 가치를 지니고 있습니다.
현재 증후을 편종은 중국 후베이성 박물관에 전시되어 있습니다. 증후을의 무덤에서는 이 밖에도 놀라운 유물들이 많이 발견되었습니다. 앞으로 하나씩 천천히 소개해 드리겠습니다. ㅋㅋㅋㅋ
