Athletes Forced to Sleep on Cruise Ship at Nagoya Asian Games
During the Nagoya Asian Games, the organizers are housing athletes on a cruise ship and in converted shipping containers. Seriously, this is hard to believe! Is Japan really that broke? I bet they’ll call it ‘sustainability.’ No one’s asking you to build luxury hotels, but at least give the athletes beds they can actually fit in and roofs that don’t leak!
A country’s ability to organize and manage itself is extremely important. The Soviet Union had a huge population, a massive industrial base, and one of the world’s largest nuclear arsenals. By any measure of hard power, it was a superpower.But having resources and power is one thing; being able to organize, coordinate, and use them effectively is another. The collapse of the Soviet Union had many complex political, economic, and ethnic causes, but it also illustrates an important point: having power is not enough. What really matters is how effectively a country can organize and use that power.
나고야 아시안게임에서 주최 측은 선수들을 크루즈선과 개조한 컨테이너에 숙박시키고 있습니다. 아니, 정말 믿기 힘들 정도네요! 일본은 진짜 돈이 없나 봐요… 아마 “지속가능성을 위한 선택입니다”라고 하겠죠. 누가 호화 호텔을 지어 달라는 것도 아니잖아요. 그래도 최소한 선수들이 제대로 누울 수 있을 만큼 긴 침대와 비가 새지 않는 지붕 정도는 제공해야 하는 것 아닌가요?
한 나라의 조직력과 운영 능력은 정말 중요합니다. 과거 소련은 엄청난 인구와 거대한 산업 기반을 갖추고 있었고, 세계 최대 규모의 핵무기 전력까지 보유하고 있었습니다. 하드파워만 놓고 보면 의심할 여지 없는 초강대국이었죠. 하지만 많은 자원과 강한 힘을 가지고 있는 것과 그것을 효율적으로 운용하는 것은 전혀 다른 문제입니다. 소련의 붕괴에는 정치·경제·민족 문제 등 여러 복합적인 원인이 있었지만, 그 사례가 보여주는 한 가지 중요한 점이 있습니다. 국력은 단순히 얼마나 많은 것을 가지고 있느냐만으로 결정되지 않습니다. 가진 자원과 힘을 얼마나 효과적으로 조직하고 활용할 수 있느냐도 그만큼 중요합니다.
At the hockey game between South Korea and Bangladesh, the organizers mistakenly played the North Korean national anthem instead of South Korea’s. The Korean Peninsula is literally right next door. How do you even mix them up??? For a second, I thought, “Did someone do that on purpose?” Hmm… let’s just say someone needs to brush up on his geography.
한국과 방글라데시의 하키 경기에서 주최 측이 실수로 애국가 대신 북한 국가를 틀었습니다. 바로 옆 나라인데 이것도 헷갈릴 수가 있나요??? 순간 “일부러 그런 거 아니야?”라는 생각도 들었는데… 그냥 지리 공부가 조금 부족했던 걸로… 😅
