Pingyao, China’s Ancient City

In the middle of China’s Shanxi Province, there’s an old city called Pingyao, which dates back to 2,800 years ago. It was first built in Zhou dynasty to guard against invasion and harassment by the nomadic people of the North. Today it’s renowned for having the best-preserved ancient city wall, street layout and buildings in China and is still home to more than 40,000 people. The 6-kilometer-long city wall was constructed in the 14th century and most buildings in the city are from the Ming and Qing dynasties. The ancient city showcases the evolution of different constructive styles and town planning in Imperial China over six centuries. Pingyao was officially inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997 and has become a tourist hotspot catering to the domestic tourists since then.

중국 산시(山西)성 한가운데에 2,800년의 역사를 가진 평요(平遥)라는 오래된 도시가 있다. 서주(西周)시대에 북방 유목민들의 침공을 막기 위해 건설되었다. 오늘날 이 도시는 중국에서 가장 잘 보존된 고대 성벽, 거리 배치 및 건축물을 보유한 것으로 유명하다. 그리고 여전히 4만 명 이상이 살고 있다. 6km 길이의 성벽은 14세기 명나라 초기에 건설되었으며 대부분의 건물은 명청 시대의 유물이다. 잘 보존된 이 도시는 6세기에 걸친 중국 제국 시대의 다양한 건축 스타일과 도시 계획의 발전을 보여준다. 평요고성은 1997년에 유네스코 세계문화유산으로 등재되었고 이후 중국 국내 여행객들의 핫스팟이 되었다. (중국의 “한옥마을”이랄까 ^^)
