Inglourious Basterds (2009) – Tavern Scene

This is my favorite Quentin Tarantino film. Although I’m not fond of graphic violence, and I’m not interested in so-called “aestheticized violence,” I’ve always been deeply fascinated by World War II–themed war films. For that reason, this WWII-set film of his has become my personal favorite. It blends history, imagination, and suspense in a distinctive way—so tense it’s almost suffocating, yet so gripping you simply can’t look away.

One of the film’s most iconic scenes takes place in the underground tavern. British spy Archie Hicox, who speaks fluent German, disguises himself as a German officer and meets in a basement tavern in occupied France with Bridget von Hammersmark, a German actress who is secretly working as an anti-Nazi informant, and Hugo Stiglitz, a German member of the anti-Nazi “Basterds.” Together, they are there to coordinate a plan to assassinate Hitler.

But sitting in the corner is Major Dieter Hellstrom, a sharp-eyed and dangerous Gestapo officer. From the very beginning, he senses something is off—but instead of exposing them outright, he tests them slowly through small talk, jokes, and indirect questions. He likely also suspects there may be an ambush outside the tavern, and that if he calls them out on the spot, the most likely outcome in such a confined space would be that everyone goes down together—no one walking out alive.

The turning point comes from an incredibly small yet devastating detail. When ordering drinks, Hicox unconsciously signals “three” using the British gesture—index finger, middle finger, and ring finger—whereas Germans typically count three with the thumb, index finger, and middle finger. In that instant, Hellstrom knows for certain: this “German officer” is not German. Even more cruelly, from that moment on, both sides understand that the truth has been exposed—and that the other side knows it too. The disguise collapses completely, and the situation becomes an irreversible standoff. No one is walking out alive. Gunfire soon erupts, and almost no one survives.

I’ve watched this scene dozens of times. Michael Fassbender’s performance as Hicox is absolutely brilliant. When he realizes these are his final moments, the way he forces himself to stay composed—while desperation and melancholy seep through his eyes—is unforgettable. He raises his glass and savors the last sip of whiskey he will ever drink. August Diehl’s portrayal of Hellstrom is equally masterful: every line is delivered calmly and unhurriedly, yet it feels like a knife being gently placed against your throat—and then slowly pressed in.

Today, this film suddenly came to mind, so I watched this scene again. After reading recent news about a female civilian being shot and killed in a Western superpower that claims to be a “beacon of liberal democracy,” I couldn’t help but think of Hitler and the secret police organization he commanded—the Gestapo.

이 영화는 내가 가장 좋아하는 쿠엔틴 타란티노 작품이다. 나는 폭력적인 장면을 좋아하지도 않고, 이른바 ‘폭력의 미학’에도 크게 관심이 없다. 그렇지만 제2차 세계대전을 배경으로 한 전쟁 영화만큼은 늘 흥미롭게 봐 왔다. 그래서 타란티노 영화 중에서도 2차 대전을 배경으로 한 이 작품이 특히 마음에 든다. 역사와 상상력, 서스펜스를 독특하게 엮어 놓아서, 숨이 막힐 만큼 긴장되면서도 끝까지 보게 만든다.

영화에서 가장 인상적인 장면 중 하나는 지하 술집에서 펼쳐진다. 독일어를 잘하는 영국 스파이 아치 히콕스가 독일 장교로 위장한 채, 나치 점령하 프랑스의 한 지하 술집에서 비밀 접선을 한다. 그곳에는 반나치 정보원으로 활동하는 독일 여배우 브리기테 폰 하머스마르크와, ‘바스터즈(반나치 특수부대)’에 속한 독일인 휴고 슈티글리츠도 함께 있다. 이들은 히틀러 암살 작전에 대해 중요한 이야기를 나누기 위해 그곳에 모였다.

그런데 술집 한구석에 게슈타포 장교 디터 헬스트롬 소령이 앉아 있다. 그는 처음부터 이 세 사람이 어딘가 이상하다고 느끼지만, 바로 들이대지는 않는다. 대신 잡담을 섞고, 농담을 던지고, 돌려 묻는 질문을 하면서 천천히 떠본다. 아마 술집 밖에 ‘바스터즈’의 매복이 있을 수도 있다는 걸 알고 있었을 것이다. 이런 좁은 공간에서 정체를 바로 폭로하면, 결국 모두가 함께 죽는 상황이 될 가능성이 크니까.

결정적인 순간은 아주 작은 디테일에서 나온다. 히콕스가 술을 주문하면서 ‘3’을 손가락으로 표시하는데, 무의식적으로 영국식 손짓(검지·중지·약지)을 쓴다. 하지만 독일에서는 보통 엄지·검지·중지로 ‘3’을 센다. 그 순간 헬스트롬은 확신한다. 이 ‘독일 장교’가 독일인이 아니라는 걸. 더 무서운 건, 그때부터 서로가 서로의 정체를 알아챘다는 사실을 양쪽 다 안다는 점이다. 위장은 완전히 무너지고, 상황은 되돌릴 수 없는 대치로 바뀐다. 이제 누구도 살아서 나갈 수 없다. 결국 총격전이 터지고, 거의 모두가 죽는다.

나는 이 장면을 정말 수십 번은 본 것 같다. 좋은 영화는 몇 번을 다시 봐도 또 보고 싶어진다. 대홍수처럼 보고 나서 시간을 낭비했다는 느낌이 들지 않는다. ㅋㅋㅋ 히콕스를 연기한 마이클 패스벤더는 정말 압도적이다. 자신의 마지막 순간이라는 걸 알면서도 억지로 침착한 척하는데, 그 눈빛 속에 절망과 쓸쓸함이 그대로 묻어난다. 그래서 그는 잔을 들고, 인생의 마지막이 될 위스키 한 모금을 천천히 음미한다. 헬스트롬을 연기한 아우구스트 딜도 정말 인상적이다. 말투는 차분한데, 그 한마디 한마디가 마치 칼날을 목에 살짝 대고 조금씩 힘을 주는 것처럼 상대를 압박한다.

오늘 이 영화가 문득 떠올라 이 장면을 다시 봤다. 최근 ‘자유민주주의의 등불’을 자처하는 한 서방 대국에서 여성 민간인이 길거리에서 총격으로 숨졌다는 뉴스를 접하고, 히틀러와 그가 거느리던 비밀경찰 조직인 게슈타포가 자연스럽게 떠올랐다.
