Yeah, we’ve known that from day one. “Spreading democracy” and “defending human rights” are just high-minded pretenses. And now the mask is finally off.

Generally, in American history, when we intervene in another country—whether it’s true or not—we come up with a high-minded pretense: liberating a people, spreading democracy, introducing baseball to the Japanese. They complained at first, but it was totally worth it.

On what moral foundation will this conflict be framed?

“We’re going to have a presence in Venezuela as it pertains to oil, but we’re going to get the oil flowing the way it should be.”

Seems a little on the nose. Oil, precious commodity, certainly, but not the reason a country formed 250 years ago on the ideas of liberty and self-determination would go into a country and snatch a man at night. There must be a slightly more noble pretense.

“We’re going to be taking a tremendous amount of wealth out of the ground. We need total access. We need access to the oil.”

Sir, again, let… I see where we’re going here. Do you mind just reframing that? I’m not quite clear on the high-minded principle behind this.

“In other words, we’ll be selling oil.”

Is this your first war? I mean, What the f*ck…

보통 미국이 다른 나라에 끼어들 때는요, 진짜든 아니든 늘 그럴듯한 명분을 하나씩 붙이잖아요. “사람들을 해방시키겠다”, “민주주의를 퍼뜨리겠다”, “일본인에게 야구를 가르쳐주겠다” 뭐 이런 식으로요. 처음엔 다들 투덜대도, 나중엔 또 “에이, 뭐… 그런가 보다”로 끝내고요.

그럼 이번엔요. 이번 갈등은 어떤 명분으로 포장할 겁니까?

“우리가 베네수엘라에 들어가는 건 석유 때문이죠. 석유가 ‘제대로’ 돌게 만들 겁니다.”

너무 대놓고 말씀하시는데요. 석유가 중요한 자원인 건 알죠. 근데 자유니 자결이니 하는 이념으로 250년 전에 세워진 나라가, 남의 나라에 들어가 밤중에 사람 하나 납치해 가는 이유가 “석유”일 리는 없잖아요. 조금 더 ‘고상한’ 명분이 있어야죠.

“우리는 그 땅에서 엄청난 돈을 뽑아낼 겁니다. 전면적인 접근 권한이 필요해요. 석유는 전부 우리 손에 들어와야 합니다.”

각하, 무슨 말씀인지야 알겠습니다만…표현을 조금만 바꿔 주시면 안 될까요? 사람들 앞에서 읽어도 덜 민망하게요. 그… ‘고상한 명분’ 버전으로요.

“한마디로, 석유 팔 거라는 거죠.”

이게 네 첫 전쟁이야? 아니… (포장할 생각이 진짜 1도 없네.)
