Bone Flute From 7,000 BCE
This flute was made from the wing bone of a red-crowned crane and measures 23.6 cm long. Dating back 9,000 years, it’s one of the oldest musical instruments ever discovered in China, earning it the nickname “China’s First Flute.”
What’s even more amazing is that it has seven finger holes and can play a seven-note scale. And despite being 9,000 years old, it can still produce beautiful music today!
The flute was discovered in 1986 at the Jiahu archaeological site in Wuyang County, Henan Province, China. The site covers about 55,000 square meters, roughly the size of eight soccer fields. Archaeologists have uncovered the remains of ancient homes, pottery, stone tools, bone artifacts, and an incredible 445 graves. Radiocarbon dating shows that people were living here as far back as 9,000 years ago, during the Neolithic period.
Even more fascinating, archaeologists have found over 40 similar bone flutes at the site! This suggests that people were already making musical instruments and enjoying music thousands of years ago.The flute pictured here is now on display at the Henan Museum in China.
I really hope that as science and technology continue to advance, we’ll eventually be able to fill in the missing pieces of our 300,000-year history as Homo sapiens. Just imagine how many incredible stories are still waiting to be discovered!
