Lunchtime For Eurasian Magpies

Eurasian magpie is a resident breeding bird throughout the northern part of the Eurasian continent. As the only bird which can pass the mirror self-recognition test, Eurasian magpie is known as one of the most intelligent animals.

유라시아까치는 유라시아 대륙 북부에 널리 서식하는 새다. 거울 자기인식 테스트를 통과한 유일한 조류로서 세계에서 가장 지능이 높은 동물 중 하나이다.

Researchers applied a small yellow sticker to the throat of Eurasian magpie, where it could be seen by the bird only by using a mirror. The feel of the sticker on its throat did not seem to alarm the magpie. The bird was then given a mirror. However, when the bird caught a glimpse of itself in the mirror, it began to scratch at its throat, which is a clear indication that it recognized the image in the mirror as its own.
