The Warring States (2023)

Honestly, Chinese documentaries these days are on a whole new level! I’m completely hooked on this series.

I’ve always loved history, and the deeper I dive into it, the more I realize that just because we’re exposed to more information today doesn’t mean we’re any wiser than people in ancient times. So many of the lessons we think we’re discovering for the first time were already figured out thousands of years ago. If we had started learning from history earlier, we could’ve gained that wisdom sooner and avoided a lot more bumps along the path of life!

On a side note, my ancestral state, Xing State, didn’t even make it to the Warring States period—it was wiped out in the mid-Spring and Autumn period, in 635 BCE.

솔직히 요즘 중국 다큐멘터리는 정말 놀라운 수준이에요! 이번 시리즈에 완전히 빠져버렸어요.

저는 원래 역사에 관심이 많았는데, 깊이 들여다볼수록 이런 생각이 들어요. 현대인들이 더 많은 정보를 접한다고 해서, 옛날 사람들보다 더 지혜롭다고는 할 수 없다는 거예요. 우리가 새롭게 깨달았다고 느끼는 수많은 삶의 교훈들을 사실은 수천 년 전 고대인들이 이미 알고 있었던 것들이더라고요. 만약 우리가 더 일찍 역사 속에서 배움을 얻었다면, 지혜도 더 빨리 얻고 인생길에서 겪는 시행착오도 훨씬 줄일 수 있었을 거예요.

그나저나 저희 조상 나라였던 형국(邢國)은 약 400년간 존재했지만, 전국시대까지 가지도 못하고 춘추 중기인 기원전 635년에 이미 멸망했어요. 😅😅😅
