Territorial Shifts in Ancient China: Spring and Autumn to Warring States Periods

In the final years of the Warring States period, Ying Zheng, the King of Qin—who would later become Qin Shi Huang, the First Emperor of a unified China—intentionally raised the prices of copper and iron.

This move pushed people in neighboring states to abandon farming and dive into mining and metal refining, hoping to profit. As agriculture was neglected, fewer people were growing food. Then, just as quickly, Ying Zheng slashed the prices, leaving those states in economic distress, with little food and a population unprepared for the fallout. Widespread famine followed.

While that was unfolding, Qin was focused on long-term development. The state launched major infrastructure projects, like the Zhengguo Canal, a huge irrigation system that took ten years to complete. The canal brought water to dry regions, turning poor soil into fertile farmland, and dramatically increased grain production.

After that, Qin opened its borders and encouraged people from other states to move in. They offered land, support, and incentives to help new settlers get started. Even 2,000 years ago, a wise ruler already understood that a strong and growing population was a key driver of national power.

Thanks to these strategies, Qin saw a huge influx of people, a boom in agriculture, and a major rise in national strength. All of this set the stage for China’s first unification under one rule.

이와 동시에 진나라는 10년에 걸쳐 정국거와 같은 대규모 수리 사업, 즉 관개용 운하 건설을 추진해 물길을 끌어들이는 데 성공했습니다. 그 결과 척박했던 토지가 비옥한 농지로 탈바꿈했고, 진나라의 곡물 생산량은 크게 증가했습니다.

이후 진나라는 국경을 개방하고, 주변 국가의 백성들에게 이주를 적극 권장했습니다. 농지를 나눠주고 정착 지원금까지 제공하며, 체계적인 이민 정책을 펼쳤습니다. 진시황은 이미 2,000년 전, 인구가 국가의 핵심 생산력이라는 사실을 정확히 이해하고 있었습니다.

그 결과 진나라에는 대규모 인구 유입이 일어났고, 인구 증가와 함께 식량 생산량도 급증했으며, 국력 또한 비약적으로 성장하게 되었습니다. 이 모든 것은 훗날 통일을 위한 준비가 되었습니다.
