Su Dongpo’s “Bamboo and Rock” Now on Exhibition

Yesterday, I had Dongpo Pork at the Banyan Tree Hotel — it was so delicious! Later that evening, big data amusingly recommended an article about it to me again. It turns out that Su Dongpo’s authentic painting, “Bamboo and Rock,” is now on display at the National Art Museum.

Su Dongpo (1037–1101) was one of the most remarkable figures of the Northern Song Dynasty — a brilliant writer, calligrapher, painter, and statesman. His creativity went far beyond literature and art; he also made lasting contributions to cuisine, architecture, and lifestyle aesthetics, earning him the reputation of a true full- man of ancient China.

Renowned for his wisdom, humor, and unshakable optimism, Su Dongpo faced hardship always with laughter and grace. He is often remembered as “the greatest optimist in Chinese history.” As for the “LOL” I often put at the end of my writings — that’s my little homage to Su Dongpo, who loved to finish his works with the same carefree, joyful spirit.

어제 반얀트리 호텔에서 동파육을 먹었어요 — 정말 맛있었어요! ㅋㅋㅋ 그런데 그날 저녁, 빅데이터가 또 그 관련 기사를 추천해 주더군요. 알고 보니 소동파(蘇東坡)의 진품 그림인〈소상죽석도(瀟湘竹石圖)〉를 지금 중국국립미술관에서 전시 중이라고 하네요.

소동파(1037–1101)는 북송 시대를 대표하는 위대한 문인, 서예가, 화가, 정치가였습니다. 그는 문학과 예술뿐 아니라 요리, 건축, 생활 미학 등 다양한 분야에서도 탁월한 재능을 보여, 고대 중국의 진정한 팔방미인으로 불립니다.

그는 지혜와 유머, 그리고 역경 속에서도 웃음을 잃지 않는 낙관주의로 잘 알려져 있죠. 제가 글 끝에 자주 붙이는 ‘ㅋㅋ’, 사실 그건 소동파에게 바치는 작은 오마주예요. 그는 작품의 끝을 자주 ‘허허(呵呵)’ 혹은 ‘하하(哈哈)’하는 웃음으로 마무리하곤 했거든요. ㅋㅋㅋ
