Mokoko Visits the National Museum of Korea

Today I visited the National Museum of Korea, mainly to see the Liberation Day 80th Anniversary special exhibition, ‘Our Yi Sun-sin’.

I finally saw Admiral Yi Sun-sin’s handwritten ‘Nanjung Ilgi’ in person. I didn’t expect it to be in cursive Chinese characters, but the moment I looked closely, I felt the weight of it—tense, disciplined, and steady, with a quiet strength in every stroke. Without even trying, I grew still. It honestly felt like a brief conversation across more than 400 years. That’s the power of written records that allow someone’s presence to reach you across time.

I’d been to this museum once before, right after I first came to Korea. Back then I could barely read Hangul, so I wasn’t really “seeing” the exhibits—I was mostly just sightseeing. But today was different. I’ve learned more Korean history, I can read the explanations, and I understand the context, so everything finally came into focus.

There’s a phrase in the Avatamsaka Sutra: “All things are created by the mind.” The world hasn’t changed—I have, and that’s why the world looks different. That’s exactly what today’s visit felt like.

As a side note, Mokoko is Labubu’s female friend, known for her fluffy pink fur, gentle floral scent, and sweet, cheerful personality.

오늘은 국립중앙박물관을 방문했다. 이번 방문의 가장 큰 목적은 광복 80주년 기념 특별전 「우리들의 이순신」이었다.

드디어 이순신 장군의 친필 『난중일기(亂中日記)』를 직접 봤다. 의외로 한자 초서(草書)로 쓰여 있었는데, 가까이 들여다보니 긴장과 절제가 담겨 있으면서도 단단한 힘이 느껴졌다. 자연스럽게 마음이 숙연해졌다. 400여 년 전의 그와 잠깐 대화를 나누는 기분이랄까. 이게 바로 문자 기록의 힘이지.

사실 한국에 처음 왔을 때도 이곳에 한 번 왔었다. 그때의 나는 ‘한글 문맹’이라 전시를 본다기보다는 그냥 박물관을 구경하는 수준이었다. 그런데 오늘은 느낌이 많이 달랐다. 한국 역사도 조금 배웠고, 설명도 읽을 수 있고, 맥락도 이해할 수 있어서 전시가 드디어 제대로 보였다.

『화엄경(華嚴經)』에 “일체유심조(一切唯心造)”라는 말이 있다. 세상이 바뀐 게 아니라, 내가 달라졌기 때문에 세상이 다르게 보인다는 뜻. 오늘은 딱 그런 느낌이었다. ㅋㅋㅋㅋ

참고로 모코코는 라부부의 여성 친구로, 복슬복슬한 분홍 털과 은은한 꽃향기, 그리고 밝고 사랑스러운 성격이 특징이다.
