Sui Hou Zhu

Here’s a ping-pong-ball-sized night-shining pearl dating back about 2,700 years. It was unearthed from the tomb of the Marquis of Sui from the early Spring and Autumn period. When it was first discovered, it looked just like an ordinary stone. But after being exposed to light, it gave off a beautiful greenish glow in the dark.

Today, we know that some minerals can absorb energy from light and slowly release it in the dark, creating a glow. This phenomenon is called phosphorescence.

The stone itself may not be particularly valuable today, but 2,700 years ago, something that glowed in the dark must have seemed extraordinary. So it’s easy to understand why the Marquis of Sui treasured it as a precious stone.

This pearl is now housed in the Sujialong Site Museum in Hubei Province.

여기 탁구공만 한 크기의 야명주가 있습니다. 약 2,700년 전 춘추시대 초기의 것으로, 수국(隨國)의 국군 무덤에서 출토되었습니다. 처음 발견되었을 때는 그저 평범한 돌처럼 보였지만, 빛을 쬔 뒤 어두운 곳에 두자 아름다운 청록빛을 발했습니다.

오늘날 우리는 일부 광물이 빛으로부터 에너지를 흡수했다가 어두운 곳에서 천천히 방출하면서 빛을 낼 수 있다는 사실을 알고 있습니다. 이러한 현상을 ‘인광’이라고 합니다.

지금 기준으로 보면 이 돌 자체가 특별히 값비싼 것은 아닐 수도 있습니다. 하지만 2,700년 전 사람들의 눈에는 어둠 속에서 빛을 내는 돌이 얼마나 신비롭게 보였을까요. 당시 이 돌을 귀한 보물로 여겼던 것도 충분히 이해가 됩니다.

현재 이 야명주는 중국 후베이성 쑤자룽 유적박물관에 소장되어 있습니다.
