A 1,400-Year-Old Ginkgo Tree in Xi’an, China

This is a 1,400-year-old ginkgo tree in Xi’an, China. It is located at an ancient Buddhist temple called Gu Guanyin Temple. It is said to have been planted by Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty himself. Every autumn, its leaves turn bright yellow, creating a beautiful golden view. The tree attracts thousands of visitors every October and November. I wonder how much longer it will live. It’s said that ginkgo trees can live for thousands of years, so hopefully, this one will live for another 1,400 years!

My favorite season is spring, but I have to admit that, of the four seasons in Korea, autumn seems to be the most pleasant. The sky is clear and blue, and the weather is mild and comfortable. The air is neither too dry nor too humid. It’s a great season for hiking and traveling!

You’ve all heard of the Spring and Autumn Period, right? But have you ever wondered why it’s called the “Spring and Autumn Period”?Well, the name actually comes from an ancient Chinese historical record called The Spring and Autumn Annals. It covers 241 years of history of the State of Lu, from 722 BC to 481 BC. Confucius is believed to have edited and compiled the book. So why did Confucius name the book Spring and Autumn? One explanation is that after compiling it, Confucius noticed that many of the major events recorded in the book—things like rituals, meetings, and wars—often took place in the spring and autumn. And 2,500 years later, I guess not much has changed. Spring and autumn are still our favorite times of year to get outside and enjoy the outdoors!
