Girl with a Pearl Earring (2003)
Girl with a pearl earring is an oil painting by Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer. He is seen as one of the 3 greatest painters in Dutch history. The other two are Vincent van Gogh and Rembrandt van Rijin.
Vermmer was a moderately successful painter in his lifetime, but never became wealthy. He left his wife and 11 children in debt at his death, perhaps because he produced relatively few paintings. Hilter was a big fan of Vermeer, some of Vermeer’s works were in Hilter’s collection.
Girl with a pearl earring is signed by Vermeer, but not dated. It is estimated to have been painted around year 1665.
The painting inspired Tracy Chevalier’s 1999 novel. In the novel, Vermeer becomes close to a servant girl who he used as an assistant and has sit for him as a model while wearing his wife’s earrings. The novel later inspired a 2003 movie of the same name, starring Scarlet Johansson and Colin Firth.
