The Potala Palace

The Potala Palace, the highest palace in the world, is more than 3,700 meters above sea level and the landmark of Lhasa, the capital of Tibet Autonomous Region of China. The Potala palace was originally built by Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo for marrying Princess Wencheng in the 7th century during the Tang dynasty. It was renovated and expanded by the 5th Dalai Lama in the 17th century, and had been used as the winter residence of the Dalai Lamas from 1645 to 1959. After the 14th Dalai Lama went into exile in India in 1959, the palace was turned into a museum. In 1994, it was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

If you want to make a trip to Lhasa, one option is to take the nonstop train Z21 from Beijing to Lhasa. Train Z21 departs daily at 7:22 p.m. from Beijing West Railway Station and arrives at Lhasa Railway Station at 11:42 a.m. two days later. The journey takes about 40 hours and 20 minutes, covering a distance of 3,757 kilometers and passing through 8 provinces. The return train is Z22. However, it is recommended to travel to Xining (2,261 meters above sea level) first, stay there for at least one day, and then continue to Lhasa (3,656 meters above sea level) by train. This gradual ascent allows your body to acclimatize better and may help reduce the risk of altitude sickness.
