Lantern Festival Riddles

The Lantern Festival, celebrated on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month, features a tradition where riddles are hung on lanterns for people to solve. Those who solve the riddles win the lantern as a prize. This custom has been passed down since the Han Dynasty and continues to this day.

Today, I have a riddle for you! But to solve it, you’ll need to know some Chinese characters and have a bit of knowledge about Chinese cities.

Riddle: Gold (金), Silver (銀), Copper (銅), Iron (鐵)! What Chinese city can you infer from these?

In ancient times, the first metals that humans learned to smelt and use were gold (金), silver (銀), copper (銅), iron (鐵), and tin (錫). These five metals played a crucial role in making weapons, tools, currency, and ornaments, and in China, they were collectively called the “Five Metals” (五金).

Now, take a closer look at the riddle. You’ll notice that four of the five metals—gold, silver, copper, and iron—are mentioned, but tin is missing!
That leads us to the answer: “Tin is missing” → Wuxi (無錫), which literally means “Without Tin”!

Wuxi is a major economic hub in Jiangsu Province, situated at the heart of the Yangtze River Delta. Often referred to as the “Pearl of Taihu Lake,” it’s one of the famous water towns of the Jiangnan region.

The name Wuxi (無錫) has historical roots in the area’s tin mining industry. According to historical records, Wuxi was once rich in tin deposits. During the Spring and Autumn period (770–221 BCE), the region was known for tin mining, and the metal was widely used in making bronze (bronze = copper + tin). At the time, it was considered a “land of tin.” However, by the Han Dynasty (202 BCE–220 CE), tin resources had been largely exhausted, making large-scale mining unsustainable. As a result, people began calling the area Wuxi, meaning “a place without tin.

중국에서는 정월 대보름 (음력 1월 15일)을 “등불 축제의 날”이라고 부르며, 이 날 등불 아래에 수수께끼를 적은 종이를 걸어 놓고 모두가 함께 수수께끼를 풀며 즐거움을 나눕니다. 수수께끼를 맞춘 사람이 등불을 가지는 이 풍습은 한나라 이후 오늘날까지 이어져오고 있습니다.
