Zi Zha Nong Niao Zun

The Zi Zha Nong Niao Zun is a bird-shaped bronze vessel from the State of Jin, used to serve alcoholic drinks during China’s Spring and Autumn period, and dating back about 2,500 years. It is believed to have belonged to Zhao Yang (d. 458 BCE), a top Jin official—roughly comparable to a prime minister today.

The vessel is 26.5 cm tall and 22.8 cm wide. Shaped like a bird, it stands upright on two straight legs with its head held high. What really sets it apart is how cleverly it was made: the head was cast separately and joined to the body with a mortise-and-tenon joint, and the pointed beak can actually open and close to pour alcoholic drinks. The intricate construction and fine details highlight the remarkable skill and artistry of Spring and Autumn–period bronze work.

It was once a prized favorite of the Qianlong Emperor. In 1900, it was taken from the Forbidden City during the looting associated with the Eight-Nation Alliance and has remained abroad ever since. Today, it is housed in the Freer Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., United States.

지자농냐오쭌은 중국 춘추시대 진(晉)나라의 새 모양 청동 술주전자로, 약 2,500년 전의 유물입니다. 이 기물은 진나라의 국경(國卿)이었던 조앙(趙鞅, 기원전 458년 사망)이 사용하던 것으로 알려져 있습니다. 여기서 국경(國卿)은 오늘날로 치면 총리에 해당한다고 볼 수 있습니다.

이 청동기는 높이 26.5cm, 너비 22.8cm입니다. 전체 형태는 새를 본떠 만들었고, 두 다리로 곧게 서서 머리를 치켜든 모습이 특징입니다. 머리와 몸통은 따로 제작한 뒤 장부맞춤 방식으로 결합했으며, 뾰족한 부리는 술을 따르기 위해 열고 닫을 수 있게 만들어졌습니다. 이런 정교한 구조와 섬세한 표현은 춘추시대 청동기가 지닌 높은 기술력과 예술성을 잘 보여 줍니다.

이 유물은 한때 청나라 건륭제가 특히 아끼던 것이었습니다. 그러나 1900년 8국 연군에 의해 자금성에서 약탈되어 해외로 반출된 뒤 오랫동안 해외에 머물렀고, 현재는 미국 워싱턴 D.C. 프리어 미술관에 소장되어 있습니다.
